Compress a video

Make a video small enough to send. Choose a quality, or tell it the size limit you have to meet, and it does the rest on your own device.

Your file never leaves this device. How that works

How to make a video file smaller

STEP 1

Add the video

Its length and size are shown straight away. Nothing is sent anywhere.

STEP 2

Choose how to shrink it

Pick a quality, or choose a size to stay under. Lowering the largest picture size to 720p or 480p saves the most.

STEP 3

Compress and save

A bar shows the progress. You get an MP4 and a before and after size.

Getting under a size limit without ruining the picture

A video's size comes from three things: how long it is, how big the picture is, and how much detail is kept in every second. The length is yours to decide. The other two are what this tool changes.

If you pick a size limit, the tool works out how much detail each second can afford and aims a little under it. The result usually lands just below the limit, but it is an estimate, so leave some room if a service is strict about it. Dropping to 720p or 480p is often the biggest saving for the least visible loss, especially for a video that will be watched on a phone.

This runs inside your browser rather than on a fast server, so it takes real time. A small clip may take about as long as the video itself, and an HD one several times that. Keep the tab open until it finishes. The benefit is that a private or confidential recording never has to leave your device to be made smaller.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The work happens inside this tab, on your own machine. Open your browser's network tab while you use the tool, there is no request carrying your file.

Is there a file size limit?

None set by us. Very large files are limited only by your device's memory, and we warn you before that becomes a problem.

Do I need an account?

No, and there is no daily limit either. There is nothing to sign up for.

How long does it take?

It depends on the length and the picture size. Roughly the length of the video for a small picture, and several times that for HD. A progress bar shows how far along it is, and you can stop it at any time.

Why is the result not exactly the size I picked?

The size is worked out from the length and an estimate of how the video will compress, so it lands close, usually a little under. Pick the next size down if a limit is strict.

What formats can I use?

It opens MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and most others your browser can read, and always saves an MP4.

Is there a file size limit?

About one gigabyte, because the video has to be handled in your device's memory. Above 400 MB it warns you, since it can be slow or fail on a phone.
