Remove hidden data from photos

Photos carry more than the picture. Most hold the camera, the exact time, and often the coordinates of where you were standing. Add one and you will see exactly what yours holds before you remove anything.

How to remove location and camera data from a photo

STEP 1

Add a photo

It is read straight away and what it contains is listed, including the coordinates if they are there.

STEP 2

Look at what is in it

Location and date are flagged, because those are the ones people are surprised by.

STEP 3

Strip it and save

The picture is copied across byte for byte, so the cleaned photo is pixel for pixel identical to the original.

What a photo tells people about you

A photo taken on a phone with location services on records where it was taken to within a few metres. Posted publicly, that is your home address, your child's school, or the hotel you are currently staying in, attached to a picture you thought was just a picture.

Large social networks strip most of this on upload, which has quietly trained people to assume it is handled. It is not handled when you email a photo, send it in a message, attach it to a marketplace listing, or upload it to a small site that never thought about it.

Most tools that remove metadata do it by redrawing the image and exporting it again, which works and quietly degrades the picture every time. This one edits the file's own structure and copies the compressed image data across untouched, so nothing is lost. The colour profile is deliberately kept, because removing that would change how the photo looks.

There is an obvious problem with uploading a photograph to a website in order to protect that photograph. The whole reason you are here is that the file is sensitive. That is why this runs on your own machine and nothing is sent anywhere.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The work happens inside this tab, on your own machine. Open your browser's network tab while you use the tool, there is no request carrying your file.

Is there a file size limit?

None set by us. Very large files are limited only by your device's memory, and we warn you before that becomes a problem.

Do I need an account?

No, and there is no daily limit either. There is nothing to sign up for.

Does this reduce the quality?

No. The picture data is copied byte for byte. The cleaned file is pixel for pixel identical to the original.

What exactly is removed?

EXIF, including GPS and timestamps, XMP editing history, IPTC captions, and embedded comments. The colour profile is kept so the photo still looks right.

Can removed data be recovered?

Not from the cleaned file. It is not written into it. Your original still has it, so keep or delete that as you prefer.
