Make a signature image

Draw your signature with a finger or a mouse, or type your name in a handwritten face, and save it as a transparent PNG that drops cleanly onto any document.

How to make a signature image

STEP 1

Draw it or type it

Sign on the pad with a finger, a stylus or the mouse. If you would rather type, switch tabs and pick a hand you like.

STEP 2

Set the ink

Black for most things, blue where a document is expected to be signed in blue. Adjust the pen thickness so it looks like your own hand.

STEP 3

Save the PNG

The empty space around the signature is trimmed off, so it sits at a sensible size when you place it. From there you can go straight to signing a PDF.

Why the trimming matters

A signature saved as the whole drawing area is mostly empty space. Drop that onto a contract and the visible ink ends up tiny in the middle of a large transparent rectangle, so you scale it up until it fits and it turns soft and blocky.

This finds the edges of the actual ink and cuts to those, leaving a small margin. The result is a file whose size is the signature, which places at a natural scale and stays crisp.

The pad is drawn at well above screen resolution for the same reason. A signature captured at the size it appears on your screen looks fine on that screen and ragged the moment it is printed, so what you save is considerably larger than what you drew on.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The work happens inside this tab, on your own machine. Open your browser's network tab while you use the tool, there is no request carrying your file.

Is there a file size limit?

None set by us. Very large files are limited only by your device's memory, and we warn you before that becomes a problem.

Do I need an account?

No, and there is no daily limit either. There is nothing to sign up for.

Is the background really transparent?

Yes, it is a PNG with an alpha channel, so only the ink shows. Place it over a form and the lines underneath stay visible.

Is a signature made this way legally binding?

That depends entirely on the document and the country, not on how the image was made. For anything that matters, check what the other party requires before you rely on it.

Can I put it straight onto a PDF?

Yes. Save the PNG, then open the Sign PDF tool and drop it on the page where you want it.
