Watermark a PDF

Add a text mark to every page of a PDF. Choose its appearance and save a separate copy; a watermark is a label, not protection against editing.

How to add a text watermark to a PDF

STEP 1

Choose a PDF

Open one PDF. The watermark is applied to every page, so split the document first if only some pages need marking.

STEP 2

Set the text and appearance

Enter up to 40 characters, choose the size, colour, opacity and angle, and enable repeating marks if needed. Start faint enough to keep the page legible.

STEP 3

Save and check several pages

Save the -watermarked.pdf output. A first-page preview may follow the download; inspect other page sizes and orientations in a PDF reader as well.

A visible label without a security guarantee

Illustrative example: mark a review copy DRAFT, then check that tables and small text remain readable underneath it. A repeated mark is more difficult to crop away, but someone with editing software may still remove it.

This PDF tool accepts text, not a logo image. Its built-in font may not encode every character. If a name or symbol fails, use text supported by the font. Password protection and visible watermarking serve different purposes; neither makes a shared document impossible to copy.

Questions

Can I use a logo?

Not in this PDF tool. It creates text watermarks. Watermark photos accepts image logos for photos.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The work happens inside this tab, on your own machine. Open your browser's network tab while you use the tool, there is no request carrying your file.

Is there a file size limit?

Practical limits depend on the tool, browser and available device memory. Large files can fail even when no explicit limit is shown. Keep an original and use a smaller job if this device cannot finish it.

Do I need an account?

No, and there is no daily limit either. There is nothing to sign up for.

What the watermark is made of

The tool draws your text on every page in a bold sans serif font. You choose the wording (up to 40 characters, CONFIDENTIAL by default), the size from 16 to 120 points, how faint it is from 5 to 90 percent, the angle in steps of 15 degrees up to 90, and the colour: grey, red, blue or black.

A single mark sits in the middle of the page at the angle you set. Switch on Repeat it across the whole page to tile the text, which is harder to crop out and is the better choice for a draft or a copy you want to discourage reuse of.

What a watermark can and cannot do

The mark becomes part of the page, so it cannot be switched off as a layer by whoever receives the file, and the text under it stays selectable. It discourages casual reuse and shows where a copy came from. It will not stop someone determined to redraw or cover it.

It is text only, not a logo. Latin letters and numbers are added as real text. Other scripts, such as Urdu, Arabic, Cyrillic or Chinese, are drawn by your browser using a font on your device and added as a picture, so they look right but cannot be selected. A script your device has no font for may show as empty boxes. Keep the original without the mark, because the marked copy cannot be cleaned afterwards. The faint default of 22 percent lets the page stay readable underneath.
