Your file never leaves this device. How that works

How to record your voice and save it as an MP3

STEP 1

Allow the microphone

Your browser asks first. Choose Allow, and press Start recording.

STEP 2

Speak and stop

A bar shows that the microphone is hearing you. Press Stop when you are done.

STEP 3

Play it back and save

Listen to it, then save as MP3 or WAV. Record again if you want another try.

Getting a clean recording

A headset or an earbud microphone, held a few centimetres from your mouth, sounds far better than a laptop microphone across a desk. Echo cancelling and noise reduction are switched on, but nothing replaces a quiet room.

The recording is kept in your browser's memory while you work and turned into a file only when you press save. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, and the permission prompt you see comes from your browser, not from this page.

Long recordings use more memory. Up to about half an hour is comfortable on most computers. For something longer, record it in parts and join them with the Join audio tool.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The work happens inside this tab, on your own machine. Open your browser's network tab while you use the tool, there is no request carrying your file.

Is there a file size limit?

None set by us. Very large files are limited only by your device's memory, and we warn you before that becomes a problem.

Do I need an account?

No, and there is no daily limit either. There is nothing to sign up for.

Why does it ask to use my microphone?

A web page cannot hear anything until you allow it. You can change that choice in the address bar at any time.

Can I pause the recording?

Not yet. Stop it, record the next part, and join the two with the Join audio tool.

Which format should I choose?

MP3 at 128 kbps is clean for speech and small enough to send. Choose WAV only if you plan to edit it further.
