Scenario

Pacific Co acquired 80 percent of the shares of Sunrise Co on 1 January 20X3. The consideration was cash of $1,000,000 and the issue of 200,000 Pacific Co shares, which had a fair value of $3.00 each at the acquisition date. The non-controlling interest (NCI) was valued at fair value at $380,000 at the acquisition date.

At 1 January 20X3, Sunrise Co's share capital was $500,000 and its retained earnings were $900,000. The fair value of its land was $300,000 higher than its carrying amount. This land is still held at the reporting date and is not depreciated.

At 31 December 20X5, Sunrise Co's retained earnings were $1,350,000 and Pacific Co's retained earnings were $2,000,000. Goodwill has been impaired by $40,000 in total since acquisition.

During 20X5, Sunrise Co sold goods to Pacific Co at a mark-up of 25 percent on cost. At 31 December 20X5, Pacific Co held inventories that cost it $150,000 from these purchases.
