How to use this practice

Scenario

Hamza Co has two subsidiaries and is preparing its consolidated financial statements for the year ended 31 December 20X7.

Acquisition. On 1 July 20X7 Hamza Co acquired 70 percent of Idris Co for cash of $1,800,000. The fair value of the non-controlling interest (NCI) at that date was $700,000. The fair value of the identifiable net assets of Idris Co at that date was $2,700,000.

Disposal. On 31 October 20X7 Hamza Co sold its entire 80 percent holding in Tariq Co for $3,000,000, and lost control. Tariq Co represented a separate major line of business. At the disposal date, Tariq Co's net assets in the consolidated statements were $2,000,000, unimpaired goodwill relating to Tariq Co was $300,000 and the NCI in Tariq Co was $450,000.

Valuation. Hamza Co holds three assets that are measured at fair value: quoted shares in an active market, an office building valued using recent sales of similar buildings in the same city, and a 15 percent holding in an unquoted company valued with a cash flow model that uses the directors' own growth assumptions.
