Scenario

Orion Group has two divisions, Alpha and Beta, and the divisional managers are rewarded with a bonus based on return on investment (ROI). The group's cost of capital is 12 percent. Alpha has profit of $600,000 on capital employed of $3,000,000. Beta has profit of $450,000 on capital employed of $1,800,000.

Each manager has a new project available. Alpha's project needs an investment of $1,000,000 and will earn profit of $180,000 a year. Beta's project needs an investment of $600,000 and will earn profit of $90,000 a year.

Alpha also makes a component that Beta uses. The variable cost of the component is $30. Alpha sells it to outside customers for $50, and Beta can buy a similar component outside for $48.
