Chemco: material mix, yield, planning and operational variances

How to use this practice
This is practice written for this site in the style of ACCA's constructed response questions. It is not an ACCA question and the marking points are not ACCA's marking scheme. It follows the PM syllabus on standard costing and variance analysis.
Write your answer in the box under each requirement. Show your workings for calculations. Your text stays in this browser.
Afterwards, open the marking points and tick each point that your answer made clearly and only once. Points marked as figures are correct amounts.
Scenario
Chemco makes a cleaning liquid from two materials, A and B. The standard mix is 70 percent A and 30 percent B by weight. Standard prices are $4 a kg for A and $10 a kg for B. The standard yield is 95 percent of the input, so 100 kg of input should give 95 kg of output.
Last month, 10,000 kg of material were put into production: 6,500 kg of A at an actual price of $4.20 a kg, and 3,500 kg of B at an actual price of $9.60 a kg. Output was 9,400 kg of the liquid.
During the month the market price of A rose because of a shortage. The production manager says that a more realistic standard price for A, set after the event, would have been $4.30 a kg.
Requirement 1
Calculate the material price variance for each material and in total. (4 marks)
