Scenario

Halim Co acquired 75% of the equity shares of Sabir Co on 1 January for $900,000 in cash. At that date the fair value of the identifiable net assets of Sabir Co was $1,000,000, which includes land with a fair value $100,000 above its carrying amount. The fair value of the non-controlling interest was $280,000.

At the year end the carrying amount of the net assets of Sabir Co (excluding goodwill) was $1,050,000. Sabir Co is a single cash-generating unit and its recoverable amount is $1,090,000. During the year Sabir Co sold goods to Halim Co. Goods with a transfer price of $80,000 are still in the inventory of Halim Co and the margin of Sabir Co is 25% on selling price.

The finance director of Halim Co has told the group accountant that no impairment should be recorded, because the bank covenant on net assets would be breached and the directors' bonus depends on profit. She has asked you to 'find a way to keep goodwill as it is'.
