PIEAS entry test: pattern for each stream, with numbers

Written by Syed Aalishan Asghar (Guides)

The written test pattern for the BS programmes at PIEAS, with the number of questions in each subject for pre-engineering, pre-medical, ICS and science general candidates.

Last updated: 31 October 2026

The short answer

The Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) selects BS students with a written test. The test has 100 multiple choice questions with four choices each. The time allowed is 3 hours, and there is no negative marking. You take the question paper that matches the subjects you studied in HSSC.

Paper pattern by stream

These numbers are from the information leaflet for the BS programmes. Each cell shows the number of questions and the level of the paper.

StreamEnglishMathematicsPhysicsChemistryComputer Science
Pre-Engineering1030 (HSSC level)30 (HSSC level)30 (HSSC level)Not tested
Pre-Medical1030 (SSC level)30 (HSSC level)30 (HSSC level)Not tested
ICS (Maths, Physics, Computer Science)1030 (HSSC level)30 (HSSC level)Not tested30 (HSSC level)
Science General with Maths1060 (HSSC level)30 (SSC level)Not testedNot tested

What this means for you

  • Because there is no negative marking, answer every question. A blind guess costs nothing.
  • Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry make up most of the marks in the pre-engineering paper, with English at 10 percent.
  • Pre-medical candidates face mathematics at SSC level, so the Mathematics part is the place to score full marks.
  • Science General candidates have 60 mathematics questions out of 100, so mathematics decides the result.

Other routes

PIEAS keeps some seats for applicants with SAT II or ACT composite scores, mainly for overseas Pakistanis. Pakistani applicants from both SSC and HSSC and from O Level and A Level backgrounds may apply this way. Read the leaflet for the conditions.

How to prepare

  • Print the leaflet and highlight the paper for your stream.
  • Revise each subject at the level that is written in the table, and do not spend time on a higher level than the one that is tested.
  • Do 100 question practice papers in 3 hours.
  • Practise English in short sets of grammar and vocabulary.

Where this comes from

  • PIEAS, Information leaflet for BS programmes, updated January 2026 (admissions.pieas.edu.pk): the duration, number of questions, marking and the paper pattern for each stream.
  • Check the leaflet for your own admission year, because the pattern and the dates can change.
