Answer key

1. D, 2. B, 3. C, 4. D, 5. B, 6. B, 7. A, 8. A

  1. Charles's law says that at constant pressure, volume is directly proportional to absolute temperature.

  2. By Boyle's law, P1 x V1 = P2 x V2, so P2 = (1 x 4) / 2 = 2 atm.

  3. Equal volumes contain equal numbers of molecules. The atoms per molecule may differ.

  4. Graham's law: the rate is proportional to 1 / sqrt(molar mass). The ratio is sqrt(32 / 2) = sqrt(16) = 4.

  5. One mole of an ideal gas occupies 22.4 dm3 at STP.

  6. More molecules have enough energy to escape from the surface, so the vapour pressure rises.

  7. Dalton's law says the total pressure is the sum of the partial pressures: 0.5 + 1.5 = 2.0 atm.

  8. At low temperature and high pressure the molecules are close together and attract each other, so the ideal gas assumptions fail.
