How to use this practice
This is practice written for this site in the style of ACCA's constructed response questions. It is not an ACCA question and the marking points are not ACCA's marking scheme. It uses ACCA's Pakistan tax tables for 2026 to 2027 and follows the TX syllabus on income tax of companies.
Write your answer in the box under each requirement. Show your workings for calculations. Your text stays in this browser.
Afterwards, open the marking points and tick each point that your answer made clearly and only once. Points marked as figures are correct amounts.
Scenario
Meridian Ltd is a private company that manufactures furniture. It is not a small company and it is not a banking company. For the tax year 2026 to 2027, its accounting income was Rs. 40,000,000 and, after tax adjustments, its taxable income was Rs. 36,000,000.
During the year Meridian Ltd sold goods to company customers for Rs. 120,000,000. The customers were on the Active Taxpayers' List (ATL), and deducted withholding tax from the payments at the rate for sale of goods to a company. Assume that this tax is adjustable against Meridian Ltd's final tax liability.
The company also paid Rs. 2,000,000 to a software firm for services that are not specifically listed in the withholding table, and the software firm is not on the ATL.
Requirement 1
Calculate Meridian Ltd's normal tax liability and its alternative corporate tax, and state which is payable. (6 marks)
Note: Use the rates in ACCA's tax tables. Treat the accounting income as the base for the alternative tax.
