How to plan it

  2. Paragraph 2: overview, which faculties rose, which fell and which became the largest.

  4. Paragraph 4: the figures for 2020 with the changes, comparing the faculties.

The bar chart compares the number of students enrolled in four faculties of a university in 2010 and in 2020.

Overall, the numbers in Engineering and Medicine rose over the period, while Business and Arts both fell. Engineering moved from third place to first, and Arts, which had been second, became the smallest faculty. The total number of students across the four faculties increased slightly, from 5,000 to 5,300.

In 2010, Business was the largest faculty with 1,800 students, followed by Arts with 1,400 and Engineering with 1,200. Medicine was the smallest, with only 600 students, so Business had three times as many students as Medicine.

By 2020 the picture had changed. Engineering grew by 800 students to reach 2,000 and so became the biggest faculty, with more than twice as many students as Arts. Medicine rose by half to 900, which put it above Arts. In contrast, Business fell slightly to 1,600, and Arts dropped sharply from 1,400 to 800.

Why it works

  • The first paragraph restates the task in different words and does not copy the question.
  • The overview names the main changes without detailed numbers: two faculties rose and two fell, and Engineering became the largest.
  • The body paragraphs use the figures to support each point and compare faculties, instead of listing every number in order.
  • Check each number against the chart. A wrong figure costs marks for accuracy.
