Traffic jams affect almost every large city, wasting time and adding to air pollution. This essay will look at the main causes of congestion and suggest some practical solutions.

The first cause is the growing number of private cars. As incomes rise, more families buy cars, and many people drive alone to work even though the journey is short. A second cause is weak public transport. Where buses are slow, crowded or unreliable, people choose to drive instead. Finally, the way cities are planned can make matters worse, because offices, schools and shops are often far from homes, which forces people to travel long distances every day.

There are several ways to solve the problem. The most important is to improve public transport so that it becomes the easier choice. Frequent buses with their own lanes, and clean and safe trains, can carry far more people than cars on the same road. Governments could also charge drivers a fee for entering the busiest areas at peak times, as some cities have done, which encourages people to share vehicles or travel at other hours. In addition, safe cycle lanes and wide pavements make short trips by bicycle or on foot more attractive.

Planning is also part of the answer. If new housing is built near workplaces and services, people will need to travel less.

In conclusion, congestion is caused by too many cars, poor public transport and badly planned cities. A combination of better public transport, charges for driving in busy areas and smarter planning would reduce it significantly.

Why it works

  • The essay answers both parts of the question: causes and solutions.
  • Each cause and each solution is explained, not only listed.
  • The conclusion summarises the argument without adding new ideas.
