The table shows how many cars there were for every 1,000 residents in five towns in 2000, 2010 and 2020.

Overall, car ownership rose in three of the towns, stayed almost the same in one and fell slightly in another. Carlton and Eastwick showed the largest growth, although they started from low levels.

Ashford and Dunmore began with the highest figures in 2000, at 310 and 400 cars. Dunmore stayed almost unchanged at about 400, while Ashford increased steadily to 420 by 2020, which made it the town with the most cars. Bramley was different: its figure rose slightly to 300 in 2010 and then fell back to 290. Bramley was the only town in which ownership was lower in 2020 than in 2010.

The biggest increases were in Carlton, which more than doubled from 150 to 330, and in Eastwick, where ownership almost tripled from 90 to 260. Even so, those two towns remained below Ashford and Dunmore in 2020. In total, three towns recorded rises of more than 100 cars per 1,000 residents over the twenty years.

Why it works

  • Check each statement against the table: Ashford 420 is the highest in 2020, and Dunmore is 405.
  • Words such as more than doubled and almost tripled give precise comparisons without long lists of numbers.
  • Towns are grouped by pattern, not described one at a time.
