How to plan it

  1. Paragraph 1: say what the graph shows (one sentence).
  2. Paragraph 2: overview, the two or three main trends with no detailed numbers.
  3. Paragraph 3: the first period (2000 to 2010), with key figures and comparisons.
  4. Paragraph 4: the second period (2010 to 2020), with key figures and the final positions.

The line graph compares the percentage of households with internet access in Countries A, B and C from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, internet access rose in all three countries, but the increase was much sharper in A and B than in C. Country B started with the lowest figure and finished with the second highest.

In 2000, Country C led with 20 percent of households connected, compared with 10 percent in A and only 5 percent in B. By 2010, however, Country A had overtaken C, with 55 percent against 50 percent, while B had reached 35 percent. B drew level with C at 60 percent in 2015.

After 2015 the pattern diverged. Growth in Country C slowed, and it reached just 68 percent in 2020. In contrast, Country A climbed steadily to 90 percent, and B rose by 20 percentage points over the final five years to reach 80 percent, well ahead of C.

Why it works

  • The first paragraph restates the task in different words and does not copy the question.
  • The overview gives the main trends without numbers: all three rise, and A and B rise fastest.
  • Figures are used to support comparisons, not listed one by one.
  • The second and third paragraphs group the data by time period, which makes the comparison clear.
